Yes, of course USA is top nation at the moment (in terms of Olympic medals) but it’s got a large population. Wouldn’t a fairer comparison be medals per head of population, or rather, per million. Here are the results sorted that way, as of 15 August 2016:

    How about looking at number of medal winning athletes per million people. I think that would change it round quite a lot by taking out the “Phelps effect”. Perhaps not so easy to do though.

      Interesting idea. I’d need to find a source for the medal-winning athletes. Stars per million of population would be a nice way of looking at it.
