What I like about LED lighting (especially compared to Compact Fluorescent bulbs):
- Instant full brightness: They turn on immediately and don’t need to ‘warm up’ to fill brightness
- Efficient: Half the power consumption for the same brightness (i.e. 5W LED = 60W incandescent)
- Robust: No fragile/breakable glass components
- Safe: No toxic mercury etc released if you drop one
- Long life: They last 2-10 times life (several years)
- They are happy to be turned on and off as often as you like.
- Cool: Not very much heat is generated.
- Tolerant: They tolerate quite a wide range of voltages without noticeable flickering.
In addition, in my experience so far they tolerate variable voltages quite well and certainly better than fluorescent tubes or compact fluorescent bulbs. LED lights are by nature DC components, but you can buy ‘bulbs’ now that have AC-DC adaptors for the lights built in to them.
