DC Lighting and other electronics

What I like about LED lighting (especially compared to Compact Fluorescent bulbs):

Instant full brightness: They turn on immediately and don’t need to ‘warm up’ to fill brightness
Efficient: Half the power consumption for the same brightness (i.e. 5W LED = 60W incandescent)
Robust: No fragile/breakable glass components
Safe: No toxic mercury etc released if you drop one
Long life: They last 2-10 times life (several years)
They are happy to be turned on and off as often as you like.
Cool: Not very much heat is generated.
Tolerant: They tolerate quite a wide range of voltages without noticeable flickering.

In addition, in my experience so far they tolerate variable voltages quite well and certainly better than fluorescent tubes or compact fluorescent bulbs. LED lights are by nature DC components, but you can buy ‘bulbs’ now that have AC-DC adaptors for the lights built in to them.

Low-power LED Lighting (220V AC)
	LED Night-light	1930	Simply plugs into a socket and displays a fairly dim orange light useful for 1 of 2 things: seeing clearly when the power is on, and for reassuring children who are scared of the dark. Uses very little power.
	Auto-sensing LED night light	3850	Nicely-shaped nightlight plugs into wall socket and turns on with a gentle white light automatically when it gets dark, and then turns off again when it’s bright enough. Very low power consumption. Good for hallways etc at night.
	Auto-sensing LED night light	3300	Similar to above but a little larger, cheaper and not quite as bright.
	B22 Bayonet fitting bulbs
	5W, like 60W filament	3030	Replace a compact flourescent (energy-saving) bulb and get the same brightness for half the power consumption, immediate full brightness, and a bulb with no toxic mercury which can survive being dropped!

(I have adaptors for these). GU10 is a fitting common in down lighters, and I have GU10 connectors. I also have a nice light fixture with space for 3x GU10 lights.

	iPhone 3GS 16GB	23000	Locked to a UK network (Orange) so it doesn’t work as a phone, but does work as a nice iPod touch using WiFi. Screen has been protected with screen protectors the whole time so is in good condition. Slight crack near the USB/dock connector doesn’t affect use.
